Allowing a proven feckless, responsibility shirking AD to have the guiding and ultimate decision-making role in the head coach hiring process seems unthinkable. And creating a search committee enables the AD to deflect accountability for the failed outcome. UCLA needs responsible leadership from the administration for once. Gene Block, in his last act of athletics indifference, on his way out the door handed Martin Jarmond a totally undeserved extension and buyout. If the current administration is unwilling to pay the buyout, then at least limit Jarmond’s duties to prevent him from causing further damage and embarrassment. His new duties should be limited to sitting at his desk without breaking anything. There is no need to justify his remuneration by empowering him to have a conventional AD role. A general manager should be brought in to reorganize the Morgan Center. Cutting waste at the Morgan Center might even pay for Jarmond’s buyout. Most importantly, someone competent should be brought in to drive the head coach hiring so UCLA has a chance at getting a capable football coach for the first time in over 25 years and ending the UCLA football death spiral.
