My 13-9 story - being a short fella, I'm the guy that sc fans like to get aggro with. But, being me, I don't back off. When I go to those games, there's usually confrontation. Wife has vetoed us going to sc games. But, that year, during sc's win prior to our game, someone in their stands had a sign that said "See you in Glendale" (the location of the NC game). I, like many others, thought I've got to be there for this game, we're going to win. Posted on BZ asking if anyone had a ticket to sell. A BZ'er responded. We decided to meet up at the game. In those days the RB had terrrrible cell reception. The guy and I couldn't connect until some time into the first quarter. He brings the tix down to me and he misses our only TD. We make it into the game.
My recollection is that the big confrontation between the teams happened between the end of the 3rd and beginning of the 4th quarters. Am I wrong? That was the greatest moment I've ever seen at an athletic event. UCLA team gathers at UCLA sideline whooping it up. SC, nothing going on, they see UCLA getting pumped up so they start walking across the field woofing. The teams mix, the crowd goes crazy, victory ensues. Thought that happened at the end of the 3rd qtr.
When McNeil intercepted, from my angle I thought it was an incomplete. I was elated, but, I said to the guy next to me (who sold me the tix), "the crowd is going crazy, for it being an inc" he told me it was a pick, I then went crazy too.
As a guy that doesn't go to thaaaaat many games, I feel fortunate to have been at> No 18, last minute decision. It was raining, the radio guys were saying "don't come, it's raining, parking is a mess, it's sold out" We came anyway. Awesome game. Was at goth of the Alabama games and the Oklahoma game, 13-9, the Oregon game.
That game against Houston, that's when Freddie broke his leg. :-(, I think.
My Hon mention: UCLA vs. Washington at the rose bowl 1993. Washington came in highly ranked. Early they were winning, running Napolean Kaufman behind their AA TE Breuner. But, Wayne Cook kept going to Stokes. UW couldn't stop it. Wayne would throw to JJ about 25-30 yards down the middle. JJ catches it, UW db's bounce off JJ, long TD. According to chatgpt (never very reliable) JJ had 9 catches for 263 yards and 3 TD's. JJ took Kaufman out of the game. We got a couple of stops, and UW stared throwing to play catch up. Other than the Barnes game, this is the game that cemented JJ's legend.
That Oregon game is the Cade barf game, right?
The post 9/11 game vs.OSU was such a weird vibe. Everyone was on edge.
The Oklahoma game ... it was hot that day. And, it was hilarious, the OK fans werre incessantly complaining about the heat. One comment "the poor band, I feel so sorry for them." I was thinking, "I've been to Oklahoma, how are y'all complaining about this?"
