I wasn't trying to make a case for Lea. Just making a case against superficial judgement of coaches based on one or two misleading stats.
And there are lots of examples of coaches who built up one program and then failed at their next job.
Means nothing. There are examples of coaches who built up one program and were successful at their next job as well as coaches who didn't build up a program and were successful at their next job or failed at their next job but were successful at the job after that or built up a program . . .etc. etc. etc. You can find examples of anything.
Here's why sustained success might not be the best qualification for our job. Building a program from scratch is more difficult than sustaining success. Not all coaches of successful programs took over when it was in bad shape. Once a program is successful for several years, the success builds on itself and a winning program makes coaching easier with factors such as easier recruiting and easier relations with alums for fund raising. A coach can take these for granted and he might not be prepared for coming into a new situation without these advantages, especially if he never faced that type of situation. We need a coach who has proven he can take a program from zero to success (and success not defined by your criteria of place in conference).
