When he rants about pitch counts and injuries, it's just straight up misinformation. He doesn't understand that relief depth is much greater than it used to be. Relievers who can come in and pump 100 are a dime a dozen now and have a better chance of success than a tiring starter who batters have already seen multiple times in the game. This is just a basic part of the game. In Game 2 he praised Muncy for whiffing a bunt on a pitch out of the zone. Muncy ended up striking out. Next time up Muncy didn't try to bunt and homered. Again, just a basic part of the game that you don't want your power hitters sacrificing any chance of an extra base hit. He also at one point suggested that Ohtani swing less hard, just crazy stuff.
Smoltz has a lot of interesting things to say about the art of pitching, the mechanics, the psychology. When it comes to pitch sequencing, I agree that he's very insightful. But there are many aspects of the game that you don't actually have to be knowledgeable about to be a Hall of Fame pitcher, and that's especially true as you get more and more removed from your playing days.
