Up until fairly recently UCLA was pretty damn cheap to attend. Not sure at what age you started attending games, but given that you state that you've been going for 43 years, assuming you are at least around 50ish, in which case you would have been eligible to attend sometime in the 1990s at which time ranged from around $900 at the start of the decade to around $3K in the mid 90s for it came down towards the turn of the millennia. And if as you say, you come from a family with very little money, then getting financial aid likely would have been pretty straight forward.
