Of doing his job well. Much better to go for the Chip approach of "the goal is just to continue with the process, while putting as little effort into roster building as humanly possible" and then delivering thrilling victories over HBCU programs. That really worked out well.

Chesney has won everywhere he has ever coached. He took the UCLA job because he believes he can win here. And if he is going to win, his players are going to need to believe that they can win, so why not set the tone that this is where they are headed right from the start? If he wins, his tenure will be successful and he will either stay at UCLA or get poached, and if he doesn't win, he's going to be out. Either way, he has to win and those wins or losses will determine pretty much everyting, not a 60 second pep talk during halftime at a basketball game.
