The portal hasn't guaranteed a player a job here.
Trent Hendrick did not displace Jalen Woods.
Jalen St. Paul (transfer, but basically a walk-on) and Shane Rosenthal have gotten to play a lot, often at the expense of Leland Smith.
We signed a bunch of tackles but Jensen Somerville is still rising within the program. He may eventually even beat out portal guy Jordan Davis.
That pricey TE we really wanted who went to Cal has still not beaten out the TE they already had on the roster.
Also, even if the portal traffic suppresses some developing guys, it also has the effect of providing more opportunity for guys buried on depth charts at big schools, or toiling away in the lower FBS/FCS.
