Nico stayed when he could've left, and he's sacrificed his body over and over again for the team. He's proven his courage, loyalty, and worth.
He was off yesterday -- the little wounded duck that should've been an easy TD, the skyrocket fumble, and the pass to the wide open defender in the end zone -- whether from a hand injury, some kind of impairment, or an overwhelming personal situation, as long as Nico and the coach know what was going on and can fix it, then Nico's got to be the starter.
