I don't think it is possible to understand the 20th century without reading that work. Her discussion of statelessness and its function as a condition precedent for mass murder is especially pointed today. The irony is that the creation of the State of Israel was largely deemed urgent because in the wake of the manner in which the Nazis rendered European jewry stateless before consigning them to extermination, it was thought that the problem of Jews' statelessness could only be cured by creation of a Jewish state.
Now Israel is itself bent on a path to render Palestinian arabs stateless, and the cruelties and suffering inflicted are both a consequence of their statelessness and caused by Israel's determination that they remain so.
In the United States, essentially stateless residents viewed as undesirable are being removed to places where they have no rights and no roots. None of the horrors of the last century has moved American authoritarians. Or seemingly had any impact on Israeli rightwing extremists.
