It doesn't look like it to me. There are plenty of majors MAGAs like, that are being cut or merged. I looked at the list.
It looks like a government looking to be more efficient in a way that is penny-wise but a pound-foolish. It's also a good way to break the union by picking off tenured professors in niche areas.
We are doing something similar in CA under the guise of DEI reforms. We removed all developmental English and Math courses and most of ESL from CSU and community colleges.
This was pushed by a Microsoft lobbying group because most people in developmental math and English don't make it. But some do. The 2 largest departments on any campus are English/ESL and math. We gutted the entire state of those professors. It's a great way to break a union.
The state saves money by claiming DEI reforms despite half of the Hispanics who attended my college before this law no longer enroll, and blacks have a terrible pass rate.
If you get rid of the worst students, your graduation rates increase even if your DEI reform in terms of the number of Hispanics, blacks, and the poor.
They are now trying to remove Trigonometry from all community colleges because Calculus should be considered an entry-level math class.
This was voted in by 100% of our legislature. What a state government wants is to cut the budget and be able to have some stat that they can brag about short term.
I give both Bush and Obama for taking hits in trying to make positive long-term educational change, but in terms of CA, it's just budget savings masquerading as DEI. This Indiana law looks to be similar in that they are claiming more student flexibility by cutting 20% of the majors.
You know what they are trying to do by what they are marketing the law as. It's always the opposite.
