I liked the scrappy vibe. It was like one big dive bar. In the 90's we'd go to Taxi Bar which had a great juke box and featured rockabilly bands, or rockabilly derived bands, and had a great funk band that often played there, too. Dinner at Taco Surf - mediocre Americanized Mecican food that was good enough, and cheep. It had a great vibe, (once saw my dream girl, Heather Graham - dream girl because of her role in Twin Peaks and Drugstore Cowboy, not so much as Rollergirl) there!
People were down to earth, not trying to front. Good times. And, ya, their politics were probably pretty conservative (I'm not), but it was like Reagan conservative (bad enough) not the current insanity.
And, there was a bar called Redz Juke Joint. Super fun dive. Just had an "anything can happen" vibe (not like a fight). One time a guy robbed a bank and then went to Redz, where he was arrested. It was like, of course he went to Redz, what else would you do after robbing a bank.
