(for instance) your sense of achievement does not come from beating someone else. When you're out there doing your thing, the goal is not to beat someone, but just doing your thing well. When you f*ck up (and c'mon, we're talking about kids here, a bunch will f*ck up for sure), you'll never be the reason the team lost. The stakes are not high, so you're naturally more tolerant. You can tall yourself, or your friends can tell you that you missed the beat or squeaked or something and you can all move on. No harm done to the band.
So by virtue of not being competitive, it's a much more forgiving and welcoming environment for adolescents. Also, you get to meet your fellow nerds where your manhood is not called into question all the time.
