They were using the live-attenuated version of the vaccine with an effectiveness of about 50–70% against shingles in the first year, but this declines significantly over time, dropping to around 31% by year eight. In contrast, the newer recombinant shingles vaccine (Shingrix) is much more effective, with studies showing 90–97% effectiveness.
  We don't know if the type of vaccine has any effect on the occurrence of dementia.
