mostly with the crosses from wingers of korner kicks in mind. True, there is a bit of arming race on that front, but that's probably just a quirk of the game's inability to develop an attacking strategy to the 5-4 low block defense, which makes them rely more on crosses, etc. (as well as shots from outside the box -- the 3 point shot range, so to speak) and the need for taller centerforwards and whoever's gonna mark them.
(hey, that ex-Tottenham "shyteface" is also pretty tall too)
Compare that state of affairs with Aussie rules, for instance, where height is a definite advantage, favoring tall players with long arms.
