My understanding is that the next election for him is 2028. If it's a 51-49 split this year, he becomes an essential Senator for the next two years and plans to parlay that into huge contributions for his campaign to get re-elected.

If the split after this year is 52-48 instead, he's not so essential. Then there's no telling what he'll do. He may stay Dem, he may flip GOP, or he might not even run in 2028.
