Before raising his outrageous allegations, Schmitt quoted the infamous Russian head of the secret police, Lavrentia Beria. He quoted Beria's famous statement "Show me the man, and I will show you the crime."
Shmitt accused Jack Smith of being like Lavrentia, goosing up false charges to destroy a political rival. And yet, when the real evidence was released, it was clear that Schmitt himself was the offender: he presented false evidence and raised false accusations against a man who was simply following the truth.
It would be embarassing - perhaps even a career-ender - for a man of integrity to be so wrong in such a public manner. But with Trump's Republican Party, it's just another merit badge.
