There us such a thing as a morphine drip which us used as a humane way for terminal patients at their final stage of life to go without pain and stop the gasping reflex when they stop breathing. It's not a hard thing to do. But that kind of that would not satisfy the public. At some level they di what the person to feel pain. But they don't want that pain to create sympathy for the dying. So they paralyze them.
The barbarity is a choice here.
