There’s more to this story.
Ukraine relies on two distinct Starlink-related systems: Starshield, the government and military-focused service, and commercial Starlink, operated by SpaceX. The distinction matters because both military and civilian communications capabilities are reportedly being affected.
Musk has said he declined requests from the White House regarding Starlink, while the White House has said it does not know why the service is experiencing disruptions.
If both the Pentagon-linked system and commercial Starlink are being restricted, that means this is initiated by the White House with the support of Musck.
Headlines claiming that Starlink speeds have been restored are also misleading if they fail to explain the remaining limitations. According to reports, connectivity is still being cut off beyond speeds of 120 km/h. Ukraine needs its interceptor drones to operate at speeds of around 400 km/h to catch Russian jet-powered attack drones.
Ukraine had reportedly reached a point where it was intercepting approximately 80% of these Russian drones, compared with previously being able to stop very few. Restrictions that undermine this capability could have serious consequences for Ukraine’s air defenses.
And the stakes are enormous: the vast majority of these Russian attack drones are used against civilian targets in major Ukrainian cities. They are mass murderers.
