According to the NY Times article, the principal sponsor of this issue seems to be the "Service Employees International Union – United Healthcare Workers West".
From the same NYT article, their intent is to backfill the loss to the state by: "The One Big Beautiful Bill Act, championed and signed by President Trump last year, included tax cuts that were partly offset by sharp reductions in social programs. California stands to lose around $100 billion in federal Medicaid funding over the next five years, threatening health care coverage for millions of low-income residents, as well as the potential closure of hospitals and other facilities".
It is a wealth tax, designed to extract more from those deemed to already have way too much. And with most of us struggling to pay the bills, it's hard to feel any empathy towards them.
I've been trying to clarify one assertion it the rebuttal argument that states...."they (the authors of the proposition) included a loophole that lets the Legislature expand the tax without a vote of the people". Is this expansion limited to the people covered by this proposed legislation, or does it mean that the legislature can broaden its reach to include other classes of taxpayer? The implication that they can come after me too is an eye opener.
Anyone know how to interpret what is being asserted?
