A question about adblockers and ads

For context, I tried to go to a Milwaukee newspaper to read about the game. I was immediately blocked because of my ad-blocker.

I assume, the adblocker just blocks pop ups, right?

So, why don't newspapers embed the ads, as if they are part of the article, rather than having them be pop-ups? Everyone's happy.

I get to read the article, I'm exposed to their advertising, and I assume they'd get a lot more traffic if they weren't blocking everyone that has an adblocker?

Surely someone has thought of this and the numbers don't pencil out. But, that surprises me.
