I've never seen the Manchurian Candidate, seen

part of it. But, I got curious about it. And, this part of the plot description in wikipedia kinda jumped out at me.

"Shaw must shoot the nominee dead and also shoot Iselin, though only to wound him. Iselin will then rise to the podium with a rousing speech that will sweep him into office with dictatorial powers. "
