in the basepath, blocking the runner's path, if he has the ball, which he clearly did in this case.
Since the defender needs to tag the runner, it wouldn't make sense to say he can't be on the basepath. Considering the other rules noted above, Gasparino was going to be out if he continued to 3rd base, unless he dove between the defender's legs, or something ridiculous like that.
He clearly got caught up in the emotion of the game. Fortunately, it didn't effect the ultimate outcome; although, I think the Bruins win in 9 if he remained in the game, considering all the critical at bats that came up in his spot later in the game.
