Standard play - if you're caught in a rundown (or heading for home plate) - and the defender has the ball and is about to tag you out, you put your head down and run through him. If he doesn't hold onto the ball you'll be safe. Only way that is going to happen.
But when he ran into him (legal) his elbow came up and appeared to impact on his face - side of the jaw. As in basketball where making contact wabove the opponent's neck leads to a call for a flagrant foul, in this case doing so brings a call for "malicious" whatever. (No way they can determine intent on a play like that - I doubt seriously it was intentional. But running into him and knocking him down most certainly was intentional - and it was the proper thing to do in that situation.)
