That's not really a "rules question," but I had the same exact question in my mind when it happened. The only reason I can think of NOT to just let it drop is that the batter would then have another opportunity to get a hit, including a possible home run. Catching the ball at least added an out towards the 3 needed to end the inning.
I donno, Happy, it's a good question about strategy.
