In baseball, missing one player can make a big difference. UCLA was not a deep team and went with the same starters almost every game. When Payton Brennan got hurt, they had to play Jerrod Hocking in his place who had only 35 at bats all season. There were several situations with runners on base when Brennan, who hit .361 in May, would have batted.
