I really do appreciate that perspective but that methodology changed decades ago. Since the 80s,at least, players have gone to college to get to the NFL or NBA. There was no other alternative. Very few go to State U for the education. Yes, there are some, but they are a rare exception today. The only “major change” that has occurred is the multiple transfers and not having to sit out a year if you transfer. Players have been being paid since the end of time. It’s just how very public. With the advent of social media and the proliferation of sports media the dirty secrets are no longer secret.

I’d love to change the transfer rule from a fans perspective. I preferred the old system too — being a fan. The flip side is that it’s unfair to the players. Why should player X be stuck at state U forever if they don’t want to be there any longer? Their positional coach may have left. Their head coach may have left. They may have been recruited over. The new coach may implement a system that no longer fits for the player. They may be being offered life changing $$ to go to a different school.

The latest court ruling indicates that players may be able to play for more than 4 years. If so, maybe you make them sit out a year if they transfer. Unfortunately, I doubt that passes judicial scrutiny.
