I can't disagree with your take. I've pretty much compared the top level teams capabilities and talents (by watching them play, not just going by the computer stats) to that of the Bruin squad. From that, in my opinion, the Bruins are missing some of the skills and physical attributes needed to be a top level conference team.
Unless the Bruins suddenly start shooting and making threes at a reasonably high rate, improve their free throw shooting, taking care of the ball better and rebounding better, you are probably right in your conclusion. And yes, the defense has to maintain that "high defensive rating" against the top teams too rather than just the middle of the pack ones if they want to move up to that top level group.
I'm not giving up yet though as I've seen teams turn things around pretty quickly after some "stinker performances". So we'll see how things go. Beat Iowa and Wisconsin at home and that's a good start.
