I'd use that fact to argue the opposite. "The kids who go to Wisconsin, Ohio State, Texas, Florida, etc most likely grew up in households that cheered hard in PG -13 ways and also cheered hard at the bars when not around kids. So this continues with the kids when they get to college."
Those are the only game in town in their area. My household can cheer hard for UCLA in PG-13 ways. But, out of the 50 or so households in our neighborhood, there is one other family of UCLA fans. And, their kids are all going to TCU.
There are so many teams, so many people from all over, that there is no critical mass for developing a fan base. I'm more likely to encounter a Cubs fan in my neighborhood than a UCLA fan. One family because the dad grew up in Chicagoland. The other is a woman that lived in Chicago for a couple of years, loved the critical mass community spirit support of the Cubs and now wears Cubs gear everywhere. (She recently moved to Brooklyn, it would be interesting to know how long before that Cubs gear is replaced).
