Smith was guarding the inbounder. But, because Kaufman-Renn stayed in the paint and didn't hedge or switch when his man set a screen up high, a man got free off that screen and was wide open out on the wing. Smith had to leave the inbounder and race to that man, leaving the inbounder open.
