that was originally built in 1903. When we played them in the mid sixties, that current campus, along with its gym, had been built in 1924. In California that's old.
The gym was what could only be described as an old "bandbox." The walls along each end of the court were maybe two feet from the end lines. On both sides or the court the people sitting in the first row, including players on the benches. had their feet on the sidelines. If the ball bad to be taken out on the sides people would have to scrunch over on each side where the player throwing the ball in was standing.
The gym was small with maybe a 500 to maybe as much as a thousand seat capacity, but probably closer to maybe 750. The acoustics were terrible. If the gym was full, which is was every time we played there, the noise was so loud that during timeouts the coach was screaming at us and we still couldn't hear him. If a teammate came up to you on the court and tried to tell you something you couldn't hear them. It was hard to even hear yourself think.
This school, during my time in high school, was never very good but I don't think we ever won there. The atmosphere was just so intimidating and disruptive everyone had a hard time winning there - including us, even though we had some pretty good teams.
A great loud rabid home crowd is a great advantage - something UCLA hardly ever enjoys.
