He wasn't doing much, at all. If a player plays as though he lacks confidence, he may as well lack talent, for the results. That confidence has come on making him a completely different player. Until it did, someone watching couldn't tell if it was just a "mindset" that had to change, which could, and did, or if his mind just couldn't process the speed of the game, something I have trouble with, and might be unfixable. Fortunately, we can see it was the former, and he's REALLY now the player the Bruins need him to be.
