The chorus was that the PG is the most important man on the team in college ball so he went after the local kid, the one he could get - at high cost. I don't see the fault in that - he was expecting Clark to be really good and Perry much improved - that's three guards.
The money may have been too much to land a ready to play center - likely so. But if there is a fault, seems to me it lies with his expectations and evaluations of the forwards and wings. Especially their defense.
I'm sure no one anticipated Dailey would have this sort of year - playing the way he's playing. I'm sure he knew what Bilodeau would be lacking on the defensive end. To give him his due, his rebounding has come from nowhere at all to add something now. But I think Mick badly needs to scout himself - what sort of team is really his best bet. All those fancy suits and John Wooden's chair and all that may have gone to his head and he believed he needed to improve his teams' offense. That's great But especially Mike Cronin cannot afford to do that at the expense of his team's defense.
And he did.
Then, when Mara left late in the cycle the offense isn't all that great either
