The question came up about why he was on the floor at the end of the game. My assumption is that he’s out there because, in practice, he executes those responsibilities better than the other available options. I see it as similar to pinch-hitting in baseball, arguably the toughest job in the sport. You sit the entire game, then you’re suddenly called on to deliver in a high-pressure moment without any rhythm. Historically, those situations produce very low averages, somewhere around .170.

By the way, on the play before the last one, the missed assignment wasn’t on him. Trent left his man in the corner to help and ended up stuck in no man's land. Williams had a body on Trent’s original assignment. Bilodeau stepped out to contest the shot when he likely should have crashed the boards instead. Dent was actually the closest defender in position to challenge the attempt.
