AI makes writing skill less important in today world (similarly to how programming skill has become much less important for software developers compared to problem solving with AI tools).
IMHO, sports management major might be more useful to athletes than history. Skills that student athletes should pick up are communication, wealth management, and some knowledge of social issues.
The broader issue is whether universities should invest their limited budget to major/classes that are mainly for athletes. Given Americans have become less willing to invest in the future through education, public universities already face widespread budget deficits and having to cut majors (eg, Biophysics at UCLA) and research. Consequently, I can understand why public universities are trying to keep classes and majors that have broader appeals.
