The most recent budget for UCLA was $12.8 billion. The Athletic Department has revenue of around $100 million.
If athletics makes or loses money barely registers for UCLA as a whole. It would be insanity to change
There are certainly schools where athletics had an over-sized influence over decisions, but that's only a modest number. Certainly, many schools let athletics influence admission decisions.
However, I don't think the academic mission has changed things. The "big money" from sports isn't that big to a university administrator.
