The major professional sports leagues justify their monopoly status, in part, by pointing to salary caps that are supposed to promote competitive balance.
In reality, though, even leagues like the NBA routinely find ways to work around the cap. The same thing would happen in the NCAA. Before NIL, the effective salary cap was $0, yet under-the-table payments were commonplace. A formal salary cap wouldn't eliminate those incentives—it would simply reward the programs most willing to cheat.
I'd much rather have student-athletes negotiate their compensation openly and transparently than force them into violating NCAA rules just to receive their fair market value. Keeping compensation above board is better than driving it back into the shadows.
