I always thought Sporting News was the best. Lindy was always too early for me. I guess they were trying to beat everyone else to the news stands and get those early sales. Because of that I thought they missed a lot of info and because of that I usually passed on them. Way back when I was in high school (a hundred years ago) Street and Smith was the gold standard.
I remember I used to love to pore over their page after page of high school player and team rankings. It all seemed so distant and exotic to me. Growing up in Los Angeles I used to try and image what it was like to play and live in the Midwest or NYC. Or how those players looked from parts unknown who averaged ungodly numbers. I remember reading about Jerry Lucas from Middletown Ohio and later as a freshman at Ohio State and wondered how this phenom's game looked liked or what life in Middletown was like. Or later with Rick Mount from Lebanon Indiana.
I've since lived in NYC and the Midwest and have been to Lebanon and know what they are like. Now I don't buy any of those magazines. Time moves on and things change.
