You're trading a short vertical distance (arguably for the better) in exchange for a considerably closer horizontal distance to the field -- and the advantage of no blocked views as people traverse the walkway. And by the way, they use the field-side edge of the walkway platform for physically disabled people, which can mean constant obstruction of views from the first few higher rows.
