So, coaching contracts are structured around buyouts. A buyout ensures the program that a hot coach won't walk, and it ensures an indifferent coach the program faces disincentives to firing him mid-term.

Chip's buyout ended in Dec 24 which means at that point he became an hourly employee. Once the buyout wasn't renewed following the LA Bowl, he began looking elsewhere, as he should. Not renewing the buyout was how they fired him. They didn't tell him to clean out his desk and yes, he still had a contract on paper, but they showed him the door by not renewing a buyout.

Ucla made the first move toward dissolving the relationship. Chip mad the second move. While the timing didn't work for Ucla, that's not Chip's responsibility. That's on Morgan Center.

Posters here need to see Morgan Center's dead hand in all of this. They need to place the blame for 25+ years of mediocrity (no Rose Bowls) on Morgan Center. They need to place blame on Morgan Center for bankrupting the department, which remains intact only due to a debtor in possession financing from Ucla. The consistent factor in all of the failures is Morgan Center. Coaches come and go, but Morgan Center remains. It's their failure along with the incompetence of Ucla as an institution since Chancellor Young left.

And for anyone hoping the new Chancellor will help, don't hold your breath. The new Chancellor will likely be more opposed to football than Block was. The only positive change we might get is firing Jarmond, unlikely as that is.

Ucla football is a mess because Morgan Center is a mess.
