When he was a DC at Ohio State for Urban Meyer, I read a tweet from Meyer that said OSU had ponied up money to hang on to Ryan Day and Grinch because Chip Kelly was trying to get both when hired on at Ucla. Think there was a New Hampshire connection.
Grinch eventually moved on to Oklahoma. Not sure if Stoops was HC at the time. When Riley was hired at $c, he brought Grinch with him.
So I would have to assume at some point Grinch was a pretty decent DC. Maybe he was lucky for years or maybe something happened along the way.
Now through the rumor mill from Oklahoma fans I know, there were other circumstances that led Riley to want to leave OU outside the joining the SEC thing. However, rumors are just rumors. So I have this curiosity thing if the Riley hire is something that would pan out long term because of all that. And today I saw a list of projected top 15 CFB teams the next 3 years and $c wasn't on that list. Found that to be interesting since they appear to have the resources they want in place.
