First, let me say, a large majority maybe even a large supermajority of players don’t really value the academic side currently. I’m unsure how many it really effects. That’s just reality. They are there to play ball and make it to the NFL or NBA.
That being said the Us have tried to sell the student athletes to the less knowledgeable for years. Hell, many here still believe it. They also think UCLA doesn’t take anyone who wants to come for football, but that’s another story. People become ostriches when they are faced with things they don’t want to believe.
I am still of the opinion that is necessary to have the university affiliation to maintain the fan bases. For a semi-pro team to exist you need the built in fan bases of Ohio State and Nebraska and A&M, etc. Othwrwise you become the XFL. Therefore I think you still need the appearance of the academic component.
