1) with a league that has been around for almost 30 years, anyone blaming “college” for anything is an idiot. “College” does not impede mls from doing anything. Funny thing is our peak achievement as a soccer nation came in 2002, with a team that was overwhelmingly consistituted of former college players. Empirically, the team has put is worse performances since then with more and more players that are not products of the U.S. system. The league has been kind of a failure in that regard.
2) blaming pay to pay is the cry of those who want to cry, but have no solutions. The response, as always is “who is going to pay?”
Which brings us back to …who is going to pay? The suggestion that USL is going to pay for colleges to field soccer teams is a joke. It can barely stay afloat. And mls is actively trying to run it out of business. The suggestion that the Fed will pay for this is a joke. It operates on a shoe string. And the suggestion that MLS will pay for this is a joke. No professional soccer organization is going to invest money in identifying large numbers of adult players to try to train up and turn into professionals. That massive amount of money would be muuuuuuuuch better used identifying younger talents and working with them when they are teachable. MLS will nevvvvvvvvver invest money into college age soccer teams. They barely field their own u-23 teams. MLS isn’t even very into the development model as it is. Dallas and Philadelphia have produced some players . Other than that, it’s damn sporadic at best. To clear up any confusion, even if they did this, it would have nothing to do with “pay-to-play”. P2P is people with kids whinging about the cost of club ball. No one is complaining about P2P for adults.
Like I said, I would love for college to have an expanded season.
But the suggestion that the Fed, MLS, and …..USL! are going to invest in that is beyond comical
