I said "recruiting wasn't his problem" If you think he was a better coach than recruiter, I don't know what to say.
Ask me a question and then say "you're not allowed to answer the question." "Who did KD not develop" Me: "answer" You: "doesn't matter, even though I asked the question."
You're saying that 5 fantastic D-linemen in 5 years is "the exception to the rule" What's the rule? You gotta bring in more that 5 fantastic D-Linemen in a 5 year period? You're dreaming.
You're point about Markey, includes a pathetic attempt as sleight of hand. Say Dorrell wasn't a good recruiter by comparing one of his recruits to ...... wait for it .... another one of his recruits! Oh, well done. Then, compare the guy, basically a career back-up to probably the best college running back we've ever had, to the starters we had. Nice. In his 5 years, Dorrell recruited at running back, Jones-Drew, you call him a legend, Markey - a guy that is 9th on the all-time rushing list as a career back up, and Bell- a guy that was a good runningback, bowl game mvp as a Freshman, and then was injured for most of his time at UCLA. As you point out, he played about 5 years in the NFL. Ya, that 5 year recruiting span really warrants harsh criticism. 1) possibly the best ever running back here, 2) 9th all-time leading rusher despite being a back-up most of his career, 3) perpetually injured guy that made it in the NFL 5 years. You want to criticize Dorrell for that? That's just crazy.
Carter, Horton, Ayers "good college players" Ya, 3 first team all conference players, one of whom was 2nd team AA were "good."
"You also seem to think I need to address every single good player Dorrell had" Well, if we're discussing Dorrell's recruiting, that's kind of what you'd do. Although I know if you're wanting to say Dorrell was a bad recruiter, then I can understand the temptation to ignore the good players. Right?
"I find it significant that Cowan/Everett/Breazell caught so many balls yet drew hardly any interest at all from the NFL." I find it weird that you keep talking about how Cowan/Everett/Breazell caught so many balls, but keep talking bad about them as recruits. Yes, we've had better receivers, but those guys played in the QB dark ages for UCLA (yes, B.Olson was a bust), and still caught a lot of balls as you put it. As I recall, Everett and Breazell only had one year of decent (though that one year way way beyond decent) QB play, D.Olson's Sr. year.
"You seem to want to reminisce about the good old days of KD recruiting in an attempt to trash Foster's," Trash Foster's? Where. I've made two posts on this dead-ass board citing articles that were talking up Foster's recruiting team. Do you read this board?
As for Chip, I had resigned myself to his go for the portal, ignore HS tactics. He did a good job of it. I was opposed to firing him. His portal-working was pretty good. My big problem with Chip's recruiting, as opposed to his coaching, was that being soooo reliant on the portal meant that whoever came in after him was going to have to start with nothing. Due to Foster's work the last two seasons, we appear to have climbed out of, or at least are climbing out of, that hole. And, we got very lucky having two returning DT's that didn't play last season, who have good size. Super lucky in that respect.
So, let us revisit. Someone took a potshot at Dorrell's recruiting. I said "recruiting wasn't Dorrell's problem, if Foster recruits that well, I'll be happy."
So, will I be happy if, in the next 5 years Foster brings in 2 all-conf LB's, including a 2nd team AA, and then the role players are the likes of Taylor, the Bozi. Yes. Will I be happy if he brings in a 10 year NFL TE? Yes. Will I be happy if he brings in the best running back in UCLA history, a 5 yr NFL running back, and a guy that ends up 9th on the all-times yards list? Abso-fcking-lutely. Will I be happy if he brings in 5 DL that are the equivalent of Bruce Davis-Justin Hickman-Brigham Harwell-Kevin Brown-Brian Price? Absolutely.
Will I be happy if he brings in the No1 QB recruit in the country, a guy that everyone is talking about? Absolutely (and I hope he isn't a bust). Will I be happy if he brings in a Chris Horton all-conf, multi-year NFL, Altauran Verner all-conf, 10 year NFL.
That's all the position groups other than OL. I'd forgotten how poorly he did on the OL. And, Foster, apparently (we'll see) is already bringing in a receiver group that will exceed Everett-Breazell-Cowan. Let's hope.
Man, you've got to be fcking careful on chatboards. Who knew that posting "recruiting wasn't Dorrell's problem" would result in this.
