Kawai was at the forefront in 2003 of pointing out that Ucla wasn't "all in" on winning a NC in football.
Ucla, he said, wanted to do it "Ucla's way", which was by hiring coaches who would work for the money Ucla was willing to pay. Which was not top dollar. Which resulted in Karl Dorrell in 2003.
For at least 95% of the 20+ years since, Ucla has tried to do it "Ucla's way" when it comes to coaching salaries, and Ucla hasn't legitimately competed for conference championships since, much less national championships.
Hiring neuheisel after the Dorrell debacle cemented for me kawai's read of the situation. Luckily for me, I took up tennis in 2007, and I've been much more invested in my own performance and development than Ucla football's subsequently.
Thx, Kawai, for showing the way! - ya boy MBA
