First, I'm fine with the way things are now. My only concern is how the current situation could conceivably leave a team kind of unable to field a team? Does Cal have any running backs on its roster? How do they replace all those guys between now and August? I feel like a little bit of viscosity in the system would do the system good.
Other than teams being potentially left w/o a position group, I'm fine with how things are now. And, I doubt that worst case scenario is very likely.
My next motivation for repeatedly posting "multi-year contracts!" is that, imo, if you're going to treat the players like adult professionals, then treat them like adult professionals. Coaches have multi-year deals w/ buyouts. Why not players?
There's a lot of ways it can be structured, and a lot of potential answers to your questions. We'll see. Fwiw, CDF is on board with it (see my post above). And, if he's being asked about it, then the CFB community must (finally) be talking about it.
