Or having any real understanding of how contract law works. The MECHANISM that a college has is the language in the contract. In times past, if kids didn't pass their classes they were declared ineligible to play and then if they failed to get their grades up, they were kicked out of school. As far as the NBA and NFL go, guys that don't put in the effort can be suspended for various reasons related to actions detrimental to organization and league, and every year teams ultimately choose to eat both contracts and dead money cap hits to get rid of those that they deem as being problems. And the NFL in particular is a very small universe where word travels very fast and owners/front offices can be quick to coalesce around shared ideals about what they are and are not willing to tolerate, and guys who choose to rock the boat will get black-balled and ultimately forfeit future paydays. A contract is a contract and it is enforceable by law. Eventually things all of the NIL deals will be done under ironclad contracts that swing the balance of power back towards the athletic departments and NIL collectives. And of course, as soon as that happens, the backroom off-the-books deals will return to the fray. The bottom line is that if you sign a contract, so long as it is a legal contract, you are legally bound to the terms of that contract and any breach will require the breaching party to make the injured party whole.
