he's too big for us. UCLA has to take a chance on a guy early. As it is, we may still lose out on Chesney.
UCLA should have been doing this since 2002, but we hire guys who have never been a head coach, don't have the personal charisma to be a head coach, and/or are often not even employed or wanted by anyone else. Then we hold onto them too long and don't play the probability game often enough.
There are no guarantees, period. But Chesney, Lewis, Golesh, etc., this is exactly where we should be looking.
Chesney is only in his second year at JMU, but he's been a head coach for like 15 years. He's 130-51 and has had one losing season. He's had four relatively small-time jobs but he did well at every one of them. He has personal charisma in spades. Other programs like Penn St. are at least interested in talking to him.
Best we're gonna do. And even then I give him a 25% chance at best of getting us into the playoffs.
