I think he’s trying to stay close and play the Bruin nostalgia angle all the way to being gifted the head job, the same way Foster was gifted the job. And similar to the way his dad lobbied influential people into getting the job over John Harbaugh.
Jerry gained some good experience this year that he can use to work his way up the coaching ladder, but I haven’t seen anything to suggest he is some kind of coaching star. No evidence he’s a great recruiter. No evidence he’s a great play caller.
He had his 15 minutes after Penn St. but outside his following among UCLA fans Jerry Neuheisel is just one of hundreds of P4 assistants out there. He should embrace that and put in the work rather than hanging around his alma mater hoping for a gift.
In any event, Chesney retained two Foster assistants, and Jerry wasn’t one of them. That’s good enough for me.
