He had is moment in the limelight during the Penn St game, but ultimately proved himself to be something of one trick pony as an OC. The idea that he was some kind of coaching wunderkind was a nice story, but it was little more than fantasy. You take his last name and the familiar looking face out of the equation and there just isn't a ton to explain the fascination with Jerry. And really, to me, that last name and resemblance to his dad is a complete negative. One the whole, his dad did far more to damage the program than help it. Before Foster, it was kind of a tossup between Chip and RN for most disastrous tenures in UCLA football history. The taint and stink of RN's time at UCLA continues to linger as RN has never stopped blaming outside forces for his failures as coach, all that despite him having had the resources to repeatedly bring in top ranked recruiting classes that once they got on campus failed to develop into anything even remotely competitive.

I wish Jerry well and hope he has a very successful coaching career, but not matter how well he does, I think both he and UCLA would be best served by him seeing out the remainder of his career elsewhere.
