Lynn's entire experience before UCLA was coaching the secondary. The strength of UCLA's 2023 defense was the D-line coached by Malloe. He made two key personnel switches, moving Oluwafami Oladejo from linebacker to edge rusher and elevating linebacker Carson Schwesinger into the starting lineup.
In 2024, during his first season as UCLA's defensive coordinator, Malloe was a nominee for the Broyles Award, which annually goes to college football's top assistant coach. That year, after losing Lynn and seven starters, the Bruins were top-10 nationally against the run (sixth overall; 96.2-yard average).
This past season he just quit, blaming himself for the mess Foster created.
